How to Help Families Who Lost Blue Cross Lactation Coverage here in Des Moines, Iowa
Last week Blue Cross of Iowa decided to stop paying for new or established patients who were seeking lactation care for their newborns and infants. Dozens of families have been affected by this interruption of care and are unable to continue working towards their goals as a result of this change. For families this means they were receiving care at 100% coverage and now will receive $0 from their insurance for breastfeeding or pumping assistance.
To address this gap of coverage, I am launching a scholarship fund for mothers facing financial hardship who need expert lactation care. Many of the families I serve have babies with complex feeding challenges such as severe oral restrictions or disorganized tongue function, often requiring multiple visits for resolution and continued support. My home visits are $175 (within 40 miles of zip code 50070), and office visits are $160. Most families I help need at least three to four appointments to see lasting progress.
I'm reaching out to business owners who share my commitment to supporting the health of our community. Your donation can make an immediate and lasting difference—helping mothers achieve their breastfeeding goals, promoting infant and maternal health, and reducing long-term health risks. The benefits of breastfeeding are extensive: babies experience fewer allergies, gut health issues, ear infections, and a lower risk of SIDS and obesity. Mothers benefit as well, with decreased risks of ovarian, breast, and uterine cancers, improved postpartum recovery, and a lower risk of depression.
My care is comprehensive and holistic. Each visit includes a detailed assessment, a personalized care plan, and ongoing follow-up. I support families through a wide range of challenges—from low milk supply and painful latch to infant feeding behavior concerns, milk storage questions, and navigating complex medical histories. I also collaborate closely with trusted specialists when needed, ensuring families receive the highest standard of care.
Unfortunately, hospital-based lactation consultants may not have specialized training in oral ties, gut health, or holistic remedies, and families often experience long wait times or inconsistent support. Private practice IBCLCs like myself provide continuity, expertise, and individualized guidance that can make all the difference for a struggling family.
As a mother who has personally faced breastfeeding challenges, I understand how crucial compassionate and skilled support can be. My faith inspires my dedication to helping parents and infants thrive during this pivotal time.
By contributing to this scholarship fund, your business will directly support mothers and babies in our community. Together, we can ensure that every family—regardless of financial circumstance—has access to the care they need.
If you are interested in partnering with me or would like more details, please reach out. Your generosity can help shape healthier futures for mothers and children.
Kind Regards,
